NEW The Lunar Swans of Lancaster
Latest artwork: The Lunar Swans of Lancaster - Sandy Gardner Limited Edition Prints
Local Lancastrian's can arrange collection from The Music Spot in Lancaster.
I live in Lancaster, not far from the canal. For many moons I have studied our beautiful beloved canal swans, gliding along the waters, enchanting us with their beauty and personality. Each year the bonded pair nest in a similar place, we delight as they introduce us to their new batch of beautiful cygnets. I am deeply saddened by recent reports related to the health of our majestic birds.
This artwork features two adult mute swans. These swans rule the heavens, their egg is the moon.
Six cygnets fly below them, soaring over the River Lune, through the moonlit skies to their next destination in the astral plane.
Within the Lancaster city skyline you will see: Ashton Memorial (shining Blue to highlight the importance of looking after our own and others' mental health), there is a memorial blue heart below the building. The Butterfly House (glowing blue & yellow for Down Syndrome Awareness), Moor Lane Mill (rainbow colours symbolising inclusivity, diversity and support for NHS workers), Lancaster Castle Gate & Keep, Lancaster Priory, the Judge's Lodges, Standfast and Barracks clock tower (glowing in pink and blue for baby loss awareness), Town Hall Clock Tower, Museum Clock Tower (all clocks strike 11am to mark Remembrance Day: 11th hour, November 11th), Lancaster Cathedral, Penny's Hospital Gateway, The Millennium Bridge and the River Lune.
The Angel of Peace, from Lancaster's Garden of Remembrance is nestled within the swans tail feathers.
At one point in history, the swan was adopted as a symbol for the Royal House of Lancaster, which continued to use it for over a century.
There is a dinosaur hiding somewhere too.
I recently completed this artwork. It is a fuller, final, more detailed version of the winged mural displayed in the city centre. I hope you enjoy viewing it.
The artwork began with a combination of pen and ink line drawings coloured with water colours washes, pencil and marker. With the meticulous use of a drawing tablet, fine brush details are added. Each design is completed by combining the hand rendered elements with layered fragments of digital collage.
Each artwork takes 2 to 3 months to complete.
